In spring of 2024 I had the opportunity to travel to Piura, Perú for a school-led mission trip. It was a wonderful experience where we did a variety of missionary work, including building homes for families in need.
I have also been on a home build mission trip to Mexico where the houses were built with wooden walls, shingled roofs, and concrete floors. So, after building a woven bamboo wall, dirt floor house in Perú, I couldn't help but feel that there was more I could do.
Watching families in tears over the home we built them, while their babies were crawling on dirt and mud, was a very bittersweet feeling that I wrestled with for a long time. After much consideration and research, I decided to create this foundation to give these beautiful families concrete floors.
In the spring of 2024, I had the opportunity to travel to Piura, Peru, on a school-led mission trip. During our time there, we participated in a variety of service projects, including building homes for families in need. The experience was both inspiring and life-changing.
Prior to my trip to Peru, I had participated in a home-building mission in Mexico, where the houses we constructed included wooden walls, shingled roofs, and concrete floors. In Piura, however, many families lived in homes with woven bamboo walls and dirt floors. While I was grateful to help provide shelter, I left with a feeling that our work was not yet complete.
One moment stayed with me long after I returned home. As families expressed overwhelming gratitude for their new homes, I watched young children and babies crawling on dirt and flooded mud floors.
The health risks associated with dirt floors are significant, particularly for young children. Dirt floors can harbor parasites, bacteria, dust, and moisture that contribute to illness and poor living conditions. Through research and reflection, I learned that something as simple as a concrete floor can make a meaningful difference in a family's health, comfort, and quality of life.
This realization inspired the creation of this foundation. Working alongside local parish partners in Piura, our mission is to help families replace dirt floors with durable concrete flooring, creating cleaner, healthier homes for children and their families.
Our mission is to improve the health, safety, and dignity of families in Piura, Peru, by providing concrete floors for homes with dirt flooring. Through partnership with local parish communities, donors, and volunteers, we strive to create lasting change one home at a time, giving children a cleaner and healthier place to grow, play, and thrive.
Dirt floors are a huge sanitary issue since they become a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and parasites which cause diarrhea (the second leading global cause of death for infants and children under 5), respiratory and immune diseases, and in extreme cases, death.
Children spend much of their time playing, crawling, and sleeping on household floors. The same dirt floors that harbor:
Parasites that cause intestinal infections
Dust and allergens that affect breathing
Bacteria that increase the risk of illness
Moisture that encourages mold growth
Research has shown that improved flooring can contribute to better health outcomes, particularly among young children.
A study done by UC Berkley, World Bank, and Washington University found that completely replacing dirt floors with a concrete floor led to a drastic increase in health, cognitive function, and quality of life (Housing, Health and Happiness).
The city of Piura has a population of 400,000 people with over half living in poverty. Upon visiting, one would find dirt roads, houses with sheet metal for roofs, trash being burned, and no method of waste disposal or sanitation. Despite all of this, the people living here are extremely generous and are nothing but kind and welcoming to anyone they come across.
